Since this is my first post I am going to give a little history from the past year.
This year has been the hardest year of my life. It started with a good high paying job and a mostly healthy and happy family and friends. I am living away from home and love life in the city compared to growing up in a small town. I had just learned to snowboard the year before and couldn't wait for the snow to fall again and get out on the slopes.
In October of last year my grandfather passed away. He was sick for quite awhile before he passed so it was just a matter of time. I was unable to go home for the funeral. This made me sad but there wasn't anything that I could do about it.
About a month and a half later I received a text message from my brother saying; "oh by the way dad had a stroke last night". I am pretty sure that my heart stopped and I felt as if I was frozen and couldn't move. My brother is terrible with emergency situations but I pushed him for as much info as I could.
Basically my dad decided he wanted to stay up a little bit later than usual and so did my step mom. He started displaying the symptoms such as slurred speech and numbness. My step-mom luckily recognized them and called an ambulance. Luckily this happened on an evening she was not working nights.
My dad ended up with no feeling or mobility in his entire right side and has lost the ability to taste anything other than spicy and garlic. But he is alive, and that is the important thing.
As my dad was recovering, life for me was going on. I got calls from him on a regular basis with updates on his health and his speech was improving and so was his mobility through therapy. I was worried about him but as I was in school as well as working full time, I was again unable to go home and see him.
As December came I started getting very bad pains in my stomach. I am someone who gets sick a lot, I always have been. I got my tonsils out almost 2 years ago because the amount of times I have had strep throat and they were ginormous! The pain in my stomach was completely new for me. And I have never felt pain like that before. I am not sure exactly how things happened but at one point I also had strep..again. I was off work for most of December. Come January I pushed myself to go back to work..I made it for 3 days.
The pain in my stomach was not getting any better, in fact it seemed more extreme and frequent.
I headed back to the doctor and I was referred to a specialist and had many blood tests and urine samples (sorry if you don't like to hear that stuff). There was always too much blood in my urine, which meant more testing. I was put on some heavy duty drugs to ease the pain (don't know what they were-just that demerol didn't work and had to get something stronger).
My specialist appointment was not until May..yeah MAY! I couldn't work because I had to take the pain pills and they made me sleep. The time between January and May did not pass quickly, I think I cried everyday from the pain. There were days that I was okay though and I did sneak in a few nights of snowboarding. It made me get out of my sweatpants for a few hours at least.
I should also mention that my doctor had no idea what was wrong with my stomach as none of the tests including an MRI showed up with anything. My parents were annoyingly worried about me..that sounds bad to say but when your mom calls you flipping out about why nothing new is happening it does not help in any way.
Through the whole experience I tried not to think about it. I would think positively and hope that it would all work out. Some days were harder to think that way than others. My boyfriend was amazing, through everything he was there for me and with me everyday he could be. I don't know if I could ever thank him enough for that. May came around and I finally went to my appointment with the specialist. He believed that I had kidney stones, and possibly at the time of the MRI they just weren't there. He prescribed for me to drink a glass of lemonade a day. This seemed a little ridiculous to me but I'd do anything to make the pain go away at this point. Slowly but surely the pain went away. It felt weird not having pain anymore. I was scared to get the pain again..it never came. I did however start to HATE lemonade :) I was not a huge fan of it before but having to drink it made me dislike it even more.
Around that time I received a letter from my work saying that my contract for my job was not being renewed. I knew I wouldn't be but when you get it in writing it's king of a kick in the face.
Summer was coming and I was unemployed and stressed. I was officially employed until the end of March and scraping by on my payments from employment insurance and still recovering. My health was getting better..slowly. As I was feeling better I joined a beach volleyball league with my friends as well as a soccer team. I was very happy to be out and about with all my friends again.
I am still looking for a job so that's a little stressful but I am feeling really good these days. I am now taking daily pills as a lemonade substitute (I got acid reflux from too much lemonade lol) and it works great!
I am applying daily for new jobs and hoping I hear something soon. I am also hoping to win a lottery that magically has my name in it..as I don't buy tickets.
I am hoping to use this blog as a way to vent the good and the bad stuff I am going through. Hopefully it is mostly good stuff ;)
